A Common Everett Failure Pattern

It rained all weekend. The car sat. Monday, 6:40 am, coffee in hand, you turn the key and get click click click, like the engine is applauding sarcastically. Every mechanic in Snohomish County hears this story most Monday mornings from October through March.

The damp weekend didn't kill your battery. It exposed it. Cold, wet air raises the effort of starting while a tired battery and crusty terminals lower the supply. The morning after a soggy weekend is simply when the math finally fails.

How We Find the Real Culprit

There's a chain between your key and a running engine: battery, cables and grounds, starter, and the charging system that was supposed to refill the battery yesterday. We test the chain in that order, cheapest first, and every verdict comes with a meter reading you can look at.

That order matters. Skip it, and you buy a starter when the problem was a five dollar ground strap. Follow it, and the wallet damage stops at the actual failure. Around here the actual failure is corroded connections often enough to make terminal cleaning our most repeated (and cheapest) repair.

Jump Starts, Done Carefully

Jumps are great for getting off the ferry line. They're terrible as a diagnosis. If the car needed a jump once, something caused that, and driving in circles hoping the alternator sorts it out mostly transfers the breakdown to a worse location. Costco parking lot, usually. In the rain, always.

Three Quick Checks While You Wait

First, look at the dome light and dash. Bright and normal? The battery has some life and the problem may be elsewhere. Dim, flickering, or dark? Battery or connections, and now we know before we arrive.

Second, make sure the transmission is fully in Park (or try Neutral). A safety switch blocks starting when the selector sits between gears, and this fake no-start fools people weekly. Automatic seatbelt tug, shift firmly into Park, try once more.

Third, if the key turned nothing at all, try the spare key. Chip keys and their immobilizers get moody with age, and the spare answers that question for free.

What not to do: crank it over and over. Each long attempt heats the starter and drains what power remains, and if fuel is flooding the cylinders you're making the eventual start harder. A couple of tries is data. Ten tries is damage, and starters cost real money that clicking at the car angrily has never once saved. Put the kettle on instead. We're already on the way.
